Courtesy of a link from Clayton Cramer, today's award goes to a Utah man.
An Ogden man who pleaded guilty to charges stemming from falsely claiming diplomatic immunity during a traffic stop and then billing police and other government agencies $53 trillion in damages is headed to prison for three years.
There's more at the link.
I note that he was tried and sentenced in a Federal rather than a State court. I presume that would be due to his claim of diplomatic immunity, which would have brought the State Department, the Secret Service and other Federal agencies into the investigation. They don't like having their time wasted, which really makes this a double Doofus award - first for committing the crime anyway, then for doing so in a way that involves people with no sense of humor, who can bring far more serious charges than merely lying to local cops during a traffic stop.
With a mind working in such mysterious ways, perhaps we should send him to North Korea as our new envoy? He'd probably get on just fine with Kim Jong-un and his mad henchmen!
