Well fed up and agreeably drunk . . .

. . . to quote the late, great Gerard Hoffnung.

Miss D. and I have arrived safely at Brigid's place, after a leisurely run from the Mammoth Caves area today and a detour through a local meadery, from which we emerged bearing bottles for later consumption.  (At least, I thought it was supposed to be 'later' . . . I guess that depends on one's definition of the term!  Miss D. and Brigid are definitely merrier now than they were a little earlier!)  Barkley is doing his best to persuade everyone in turn that he's a hard-done-by Labrador who really, really needs people food to put all right with his world once again.  I swear, if people lived in hope as much as he does, the world would be a seething cauldron of anticipation!

Nothing more to add tonight, except laughter and the love of friends.  I'll try to post at greater length tomorrow.

G'night, y'all.

Peter

That's the best line I've heard all day! Have fun, folks.

If you haven't been in "The Big Cave" yet, take teh chance when you are in the area. I used to be involved in the exploration and mapping of the system before injuries suffered in '83 pile up to an extent that I became a liability to the effort.

Take the Historic and Half Day tour (it's not really an entire half day, but it is wearing). The two tours give a good feel for the size and extent of the cave which is now over 300 miles of explored and mapped passages (I use the term mapped loosely here as the people doing the work are amateurs that think they know everything about surveying and mapping).

Historic Tour takes about 2 hours. In 2003, the last time I stopped by, they had a self guided tour that went into the Historic Entrance and down Main Cave to Giant's Coffin that isn't very strenuous. The entire Historic Tour might be a bit much if you have a bad back. IF you can stand and walk OK, then the half day tour is OK, but the Historic Tour has a piece in which you are bent double for about 20 yards. That takes you into "Great Relief Hall" where you get to sit down, rest and use the potty. They sell box lunches in the Snowball Dining Room, or they used to. I've heard the service elevator is busted and I don't know if they repaired it or not.

Good trip with only about a 5 mile jog off I-65 at Exit 48. You can get off at Exit 52 (Cave City) as well,m but it's a bit longer into the visitor's area of the park.
