I gained a similar frame of reference watching one of the races when the pace car - a quarter-million dollar Mercedes-McLaren SLR - was in front of the pack, going very hard indeed. The racecars behind it looked like they were out for a Sunday drive with Aunt Bea in the back.
I'm a little afraid of what the engineers could come up with if the rules were loosened a little!
